The rise of the Celebrant

Celebrant-led weddings in the UK are booming, with many couples looking to move away from traditional ceremonies at religious venues and registry offices.

And with the likes of Made in Chelsea and Strictly star Jamie Laing officiating at Spencer and Vogue’s second wedding and Adele overseeing the nuptials for best friend Alan Carr, there really are no limits on who, where and how you host your ceremony!

If you’re looking to book a Celebrant you may have lots of questions, so the Wedding Team at Delamere Manor are here to help with some top tips and advice!

Where to look?

Depending on whether you want a Humanist Celebrant or an independent one, there are lots of directory websites including on Hitched Hitched as well as UK Celebrants and Humanism.

It’s worth looking at their websites and checking them out on social before getting in touch and arranging to meet. You may also want to ask other suppliers for any recommendations or maybe you have a friend or family member that fits the bill to make it extra personal!

Is it a legally binding ceremony?

No. You’ll need to book your legal marriage ceremony in a church or registry office separately. Many couples choose to do this the day before and you’ll need two witnesses in attendance to make your marriage legally binding.

What’s the difference between an Independent and Humanist Celebrant?

Both types of Celebrant offer lots of creative freedom in terms of vows and allowing you to really personalise these. Humanist Celebrants operate within the humanism belief system meaning no ‘act of worship’ can be carried out during a ceremony (although there is often some flexibility for couples who want to incorporate elements of their culture and values) whereas Independent Celebrants perform weddings for couples of all beliefs or none.

Can I get married anywhere?

In short, yes! Celebrants can hold your ceremony pretty much anywhere, so if you’ve always dreamed of an outdoor or unusual location this could be the option for you! At Delamere Manor we have lots of stunning outdoor options where you can hold your ceremony as well as our courtyard with its retractable roof to cover all eventualities!
