Jesse Tyler Ferguson Says He Wasn’t Sarah Hyland’s First Choice Wedding Officiant

Sarah Hyland likes to keep it in the (modern) family.

The actress finally tied the knot with Wells Adams last week in a stunning wedding ceremony at a California vineyard, led by none other than her “Modern Family” colleague Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

However, Ferguson — who played Mitchell Pritchett, Hyland’s character’s uncle, on the show — revealed that he wasn’t exactly Hyland’s first choice when it came to directing her wedding.

During a screening of his Netflix film ‘Ivy + Bean’, the 46-year-old actor revealed that he replaced his other ‘Modern Family’ colleague, Ty Burrell, who plays Hyland’s father on the hit show, as the officiant.

Burrell, 55, was originally supposed to conduct the ceremony but had to withdraw several days before the big day due to a family emergency.

In the end he couldn’t be there.

“I don’t know if people know about this, but Ty Burrell was meant to do it, and there was a family emergency,” Ferguson told ET.

“So I got a call 12 days before the wedding, and that’s why Ty wasn’t there, he had things going on.”

Some of Hyland’s other “Modern Family” co-stars, including Sofia Vergara, Julie Bowen, Nolan Gould and Ariel Winter, attended the big event.

“Everyone was invited and not everyone could make it, but I had 12 days and I was like, ‘Well, no pressure, this is my first time, and then it’s going to be a wedding, and it’s going to be in Vogue magazine, and there will also be paparazzi photos of me from a helicopter, on duty, with no pressure,” he told the outlet.

The actor said Burrell graciously gave him some “bullet points” on what to say at the ceremony.

“He hadn’t written anything down, but he had some ideas, and I thought, ‘Oh, this is all very good. This is a starting place,’” Ferguson added.

Hyland and Adams finally tied the knot more than three years after Adams asked the question. They were originally supposed to say “I do” in August 2020, but had to postpone their wedding twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
