Chinedu, the brother of the groom, Obinna Dieke who died alongside five wedding guests on Saturday in the community of Eka Utara in Adani, Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State has disclosed that his late brother was the bread winner.
Naija News reports that the victims had attended a traditional wedding ceremony in Obollor-Eke in Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State on Friday, August 26, and were found unconscious in a room with foamy discharge from their mouths, the following morning.
Speaking about their death, Chinedu told BBC News that one of their in-law, Joseph Ogbonna with his two sons, Chijindu and Obinna were amongst the casualties in the tragic incident.
He further added that his sister, identified as Goodness and mother of Chijindu and Obinna is receiving treatment.
He said, the mother of the groom is currently receiving treatment in the hospital.
One of the community members who pleaded anonymity, said they suspected food poisoning as the cause of the deaths, but are not so sure.
The source also said some people suspect that the victims may have died as a result of the carbon dioxide inhaled from the generator brought close to the veranda while it rained, during the wedding ceremony.
The source noted that the actual cause of the deaths will remain a mystery until an autopsy is conducted on the dead bodies
Police Promises To Investigate
Meanwhile the Commissioner of Police in the state, Ahmed Ammani has assured the locals that a full-scale investigation has been ordered into the incident.
The statement reads: “Following the receipt of a report alleging the Sudden and Unnatural Death (SUD) of six (6) persons and the hospitalization of eight others, at Akutara Village in Adani Community of Uzo-Uwani LGA, on 27/08/2022 at about 0930hrs, the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Ahmed Ammani, fdc, has ordered the State CID Enugu to launch a full-scale investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the death and hospitalization of the victims.
“He commiserates with the families and friends of the deceased, while calling on residents of the community to maintain peace and support the Police with necessary information in the investigation“
