VILLA DEL BALBIANELLO

The villa was built in 1787 for Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini. After the death of the cardinal in 1796, the villa passed to his nephew Porro-Lamberteny. Then the villa was bought by Giuseppe Visconti Arconati. At the beginning of the 20th century, an American military officer, Butler Ames, became the owner of the villa; he restored the villa and its gardens. In 1974, the villa was purchased by Guido Monzino (the explorer who led the first Italian expedition to Mount Everest). After his death in 1988, the villa, according to Monzino’s will, came into the possession of the National Trust.
